From 1971 to his retirement in 2011, Woody Durham was the "Voice of the Tar Heels," the radio play-by-play man for the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill. Our State magazine once said "To his listeners, he has been a faceless passenger in a car, the audio to a muted television, or the man inside the earplugs. To his listeners, he's what powder blue sounds like."

Even in Kenan Stadium or the Dean Smith Center, hundreds of fans listened to the radio at the games so Woody could tell them what was really happening on the field or the court.

In this autobiography, Woody takes the reader on a nostalgic stroll down memory lane - from his descriptions of a sleepy Franklin Street in Chapel Hill and the days of football legend Choo Choo Justice to the enormous changes in college sports and how they are covered to his dozens of behind-the-scenes stories about the coaches and players he worked with during his tenure. An appendix offers Woody's thoughts on every football and basketball player he covered who has an honored jersey at UNC.

As coauthor Adam Lucas describes in his acknowledgments "This book is about [Woody's] life, but for many of us, it's also about an era of Tar Heel sports - one that we heard through him."

Woody Durham A Tar Heel Voice (Audible Audio Edition) Woody Durham Adam Lucas Woody and Jean Durham Books

Woody offers insight to the University of North Carolina and the school's athletic department that only he can offer. He gives his readers a glimpse into the history and culture of Chapel Hill that makes you feel a part of the Carolina way. By hearing his story you also are acquainted with the people that he met along the way including the players and coaches of UNC. I would recommend this book to anyone wanting an insider's perspective into Carolina athletics.

Woody Durham A Tar Heel Voice (Audible Audio Edition) Woody Durham Adam Lucas Woody and Jean Durham Books Reviews

Bought this for my husband as a Christmas gift and he really enjoyed the read and shared it with friends. Any fan of The Voice of Carolina will really enjoy the read.
If you are a Tarheel sports junky, this is your book. Love the way the book is set up for reading - different, compelling, and includes some "highlight moments from the past". Must read for UNC people, but even the Dookies would like it.
A great gift of any NC fan
What can say, if you are a true Carolina fan you always watched the game and listened to WoodyDurham call the game on the radio !!! Buy the book.
I am a UNC fan. I know to spell dook the right way. I have spent many hours watching UNC events with the TV sound off while listening to Woody on the radio. The passion that came through on those broadcasts does not come through in this book. I was hoping for more inside stories and a glimpse of the UNC coaches and players as people. While still a worthwhile read it could have been so much more.
Woody's early Tarheel experiences parallel mine since we are the same age with similar memories. (We were both members of the freshman class at UNC in '59-'60) My earliest UNC memories involved meeting "Choo Choo Justice when I was about 8 years old.(My older brother had been at UNC when Choo Choo played there.) My earliest basketball memories mostly involve the fantastic run for the 1957 team (and seeing these basketball heroes when they came to scrimmage the '59-'60 team.) Reading Woody's book helped me relive some great memories!! My only reason for rating the book 4 instead of 5 is because it got a little involved in too much detail at times. A really great read for any Tarheel fans!!!!
If you are a Carolina fan, this is a must read. It is enjoyable, but had potential to be 5 star. Some of the stories are so vague, they may as well have been left out. He was a great announcer though, and it is fun to read and remember.
